
Similar games have been played in taverns since the sixteenth centuryunder various names such as Shoffe-grote (when the coins used were EdwardIV groats), Slide-thrift and Push-penny. Shove Ha'penny came into existencearound 1840 and would have originally been played on any flat surface thatcould have the requisite lines inscribed on it. Nowadays, a specialisedboard is used in pubs across Great Britian.
